Axl Rose Says He "Felt Lame" Explaining Illness to Abu Dhabi Audience

Axl Rose Thanks Fans for Helping Him Through Abu Dhabi Concert

Guns N' Roses front man Axl Rose is thanking fans again for their support and understanding after GNR had to cut short its set this past weekend in Abu Dhabi.

The singer reiterated in a series of Tweets that he's been battling a severe flu as the band's marathon Not in This Lifetime world tour comes to a close.

"Wanna thank all the fans, the band n' [everyone for] their concern n' well wishes!" he wrote. "In Johannesburg w/ plenty of time [to be] ready [for] the show! This flu or whatever is a wild ride! Comes in waves. [You're] ok till [you're] not!"

The crippling illness struck sometime over the weekend. Rose was reportedly throwing up backstage at the Du Arena for hours before GNR's set Sunday in the United Arab Emirates. But rather than cancel the gig, Rose pressed on, performing for over two hours before pulling the plug after "November Rain."

In stark contrast to his prima donna reputation from the '90s, Rose addressed the crowd before the show, explaining his illness and that he intended to make sure the fans got their money's worth.

"Felt lame explainin' myself earlier on at the gig but really didn't know how things would play out [and] wanted to do [our] best [for] the fans," Rose said, noting he's never before performed in such bad condition.

He added that he enjoyed the concert despite his illness and he hopes the band didn't disappoint. He says the crowd was great, and he appreciated the "gentle breeze in the desert."

Rose's band mates sung his praises after the challenging gig.

Bassist Duff McKagan said via Twitter Sunday that Rose "pulled a damn miracle...the man was beyond ill, and pulled off something I've never seen in my 40 years of playing. You all pulled him thru."

"Abu Dhabi, you guys were f---ing great tonight!" added guitarist Slash. "Axl was severely ill. But you all were hugely supportive. Thanks for that. We'll see [you] again next time! Cheers!"

GNR guitarist Slash explained in an interview over the summer, that he was amazed by Rose's endurance and professionalism since the two reconnected in the band.

The Abu Dhabi concert was the 157th show of the Not in This Lifetime world tour, which began in 2016.
