Big Sean used his music to channel his emotions after splitting with ex-fiancé Naya Rivera. However, the rapper recently admitted that he never would have recorded the diss record, "I Don't F*ck With You" had he known that the Glee alum's life would've come to such a tragic end.
In an interview with New York Magazine, which was published on Tuesday (September 1), Sean opened up about the tragic death. Asked if he regrets the track featuring E-40, the rapper said, "That's a tough question to answer because I’m still processing a lot of that. I don’t feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her. She’s made such an impact on people, and she’s done so many great things in her life and her career that it was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her."
Big Sean went on to admit that the NSFW track "wasn't a diss to her" and even played the song for the late actress. "She knew about it, and she liked it," he said. "We had a breakup that was very public, and we were young and we forgave each other and moved on from that. If I would have known something this tragic would have happened, I would have never made the song."
As fans know, Sean and Rivera began dating in 2013 and the lyricist popped the question to her just months into their romance, before calling things off in April 2014. "Rest In Peace Naya, God Bless your Soul! Thank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence," the Detroit rapper wrote in honor of the star in July. "You are a hero! Not just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldn’t achieve that on their own. I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person."
As you know, Rivera drowned in Lake Piru, California during a boating outing with her four-year-old son, Josey. As the story goes, the two went out for a swim at the lake, but something went awry with the boat and Rivera boosted her son back onto the craft and disappeared under the water. She was 33.
